Grace and Law

Sections of Galatians: Grace and the Gospel, Ch.1-2; Grace and the Law, Ch. 3-4; Grace and Living Ch.5-6.

Why did God give the Law? Gal.3:24. To show our need for Christ and His righteousness.

Gal.4:1-20. Paul uses a Legal Argument (Gal.4:1-11) and a Personal Argument (Gal.4:12-20) to show that Grace is better than the Law. He uses Symbolism (Gal.4:21-34) to point out that Grace is above the Law & superior to the Law.

Contrasting Arguments In Paul’s Legal Argument: A Son & A Slave (Gal.4:1-7), Liberty & Bondage (Gal.4:8-11).

First—Contrast Between A Son & Slave (v.1-7): we see An Illustration (v.1-2), An Application (v.3-5), Our Inheritance (v.6-7).

Second—Contrast Between Liberty & Bondage (v.8-11): we see The Facts Paul States (v.8-10). The Fears Paul Has (v.11).

Paul’s Personal Argument (Gal.4:12-20): The Freedom He Has (v.12), His Physical Infirmity (v.13-15), Opposition (v.16), Be Zealous (v.17-18), Paul’s Heart (v.19-20)  

Paul’s Symbolic Argument (Gal.4:21-34)  

First: His Question (v.21).

Second: His Illustration (v.22-27)—The Two Positions (v.23), The Two Covenants (v.24), The Two Mounts (v.24), The Two Jerusalems (v.25-27).

Third: His Application (v.28-30)—The Promise (v.28), The Persecution (v.29), The Problem (v.30)

Fourth: Paul’s Conclusion (v.31).
